René Goscinny falleció repentinamente en 1977 a unos tempranos 51 años durante una prueba de esfuerzo en un chequeo de rutina poco después de acabar el rodaje. No llegó a ver el estreno de la película

El fallecimiento de Goscinny se produjo cuando faltaba una sola secuencia por rodar: la de los Dalton emulando a Gene Kelly en “Cantando bajo la lluvia”.
Se establece aquí un probablemente casual pero inquietante paralelismo: Albert Uderzo decidió homenajear a su fallecido compañero haciendo que lloviera durante todas las viñetas que quedaban de “Astérix en Bélgica”, último guion que Goscinny completó.
